SNAKES ALIVE!

Since the flood this past Monday, the inside of my car has a very musty smell to it.  This morning on the way in to work, I remember something my friend Kathy told me when I visited her in February.  We were in her greenhouse.   "Be careful.  There is a snake in here."   "How can you tell?"  "You can smell snakes."  "What do they smell like?"  "Musty."

Here I am going down the freeway this morning thinking, "Maybe there is a snake in my car and it emits that musty smell when I get in it."

Of course, it is 5:30 am, it's pitch black outside and inside my car.  I can't look around.  I'm going down that freeway doing 65 (the speed limit) and trying not to be run over by the people driving 90 mph.

Sure, I could turn on the inside lights but so what? Ok, I did turn them on. But so what? I can't look around the floor, under the seats and such while I'm driving!

I think, how could a snake get into my car.  I figured through the bottom of the engine.  Then I remembered that man from church when I was a kid.  I think it was DL Freeman but I'm not sure.  It could have been Houston Davidson.  He told a story of driving and feeling something crawling up his pants leg.  He shook his leg and out fell a SNAKE!

So now I'm thinking:  The snake came in through the engine.  He might slither or fall out on my foot or leg.  What if it is poisonous?  How could I even tell?  It's dark in here!

What if it bites me?  Could I tell if it was poisonous by the bite?  I don't know!  I don't like snakes so I know little about them.  If I got bitten, what could I do?  I'm driving down the freeway at 65 mph!

I finally reached the convenience store by my office.  I got out.  Looked around the inside and saw no slithering snake.

When I returned to the car, the musty smell was gone.  I'm left wondering:  Did the snake escape the car, did it get used to me and stop emitting that musty smell or was there ever a snake to begin with?

I don't know but I'm blaming Kathy for telling me that!  If she hadn't, I would have assumed it was just some water that got into my car somehow since there was nothing wet left in my car.

Yes, this is my life and this is how my brain works.  Not occasionally.  Every day.  24 hours a day.  It doesn't save the world but it does keep me entertained.

ARE YOU BLOCKING YOUR BLESSINGS?

I am a very blessed person.  Not just occasionally.  Every day I am blessed.

I truly believe in asking and you shall receive.  I believe in tithing and giving as a Law of God.  Some call it a Law of the Universe.  Either way, it works.

I have put it to the test many, many times.  When I tithe and give I always have extra money left at the end of the month.  When I don’t tithe and give, I’m broke at the end of the month.  I believe that God rewards your faithfulness and He proves it to me daily.

Over 30 years ago I went home for lunch.  My friend Kathy was with me.  When I arrived home there was no electricity, no water, and no gas.  I immediately headed to the bank.   I knew I had paid all the household bills with my paycheck, which I received the first day of every month.  Nothing had been paid.  All the money was gone.  And our account was overdrawn.  I was overwhelmed and distraught.  Later in the evening my ex-husband told me he had taken all the money out of the bank because he needed it.  All I could think of was: where would I get the money to get my bills paid for the month.   It was another two weeks or so before I got paid again.  And that money would have to pay for the next month’s bills.  I thought my brain would explode.

In desperation, I called my mother and asked if I could borrow half of it.  I sent her checks to be deposited on the first of each month.  I would have rather had a needle poked in my eye than ask my mother for anything but in this case I had no choice.   I was still short the other half of what I needed.

The next morning my friend, Kathy, came to work and said, “here’s the money you need.  If you pay me back, great.  If you don’t, it will never affect our friendship.”   I couldn’t believe it.   I swore that day that I would never ever borrow money from a friend or family member again.  And I never have.

My life being married was always plagued with money problems.  I was the more responsible one with money.  My ex wasn’t.  It kept our financial life in turmoil.  We rarely had more than a few dollars in the bank and nothing in savings.

I tell you that because I never paid my friend back that money.   And true to her word, she never asked about it, never treated me differently.  She just treated me the same as always.  I always felt ashamed.  After I divorced and was in control of all the money I was able to save the money up.

I thought about just mailing her the money with a note.   But I just couldn’t mail it.  She didn’t mail it to me.  She cashed a check and put that money in my hand.  I wanted to do the same when I repaid her.

Not too long ago I visited her for the first time in years.  I rehearsed many times how I was going to give the money to her and what I would say.  Nothing seemed to express all of my feelings adequately.  We were sitting at the table one morning and I told her there was something I wanted to tell her.  I told her there was no easy way to do it, so I just started in.

I told her that back in those days when I had no one and I mean no one to help me, she just stepped up and offered.   I told her that I had never ever had anyone do that for me.  I reminded her of what she had told me about paying it back and how she had been true to her word.  I told her that not a day went by that I didn’t think about it.  I told her how I thought about mailing it but wanted to give it back the way she had given it to me.   I told her how sorry I was that I had never paid it back through all the years.

She took the folded bills and laid them on the table.   And then she said this:  “I’m so sorry you ever lost a minute of sleep over this.  I have never ever even thought about it.”   We hugged and it was done.  The weight was lifted.  Tell me.   How many people do you know like this woman?   Me either.

So what does this story have to do with God being faithful to His word?  Well, I had believed for a while that I had blessings being blocked because I had never taken care of this debt.  One week after paying off my debt to Kathy, I was given an opportunity which resulted in me receiving more money than the money I repaid her.  That same opportunity has continued for 6 weeks.   Every week and still continues.

I believe even when we falter, God will still increase our blessings when we make things right.   It might be repaying a debt, forgiving someone, repairing a broken relationship, making a change in our lives or keeping a promise we never have.   Only we know where we have falter.   When we make it right, the burden will leave.

Take a little time and reflect on your life.   Are you blocking your blessings?   If you are, make things right and let God’s mercy and blessings cover you like Blue Bonnets cover a field in Texas in the spring.  You will experience a peace and calm that you can only imagine.

Try it.  You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

YOU ARE A WORK OF ART!

Yes you are! Yep, I'm talking to each of you!

You are an original. One of a kind!  Perfection. Just the way the artist intended for you to be. He has captured your heart, your spirit and your love! Look into your eyes. Do you see it? He does.

Great art is not always appreciated in the beginning. But over time, others come to see the beauty that the artist always knew was there.  It’s time for you to see your beauty too.

Don't let someone else set the value of you based on their assumptions and beliefs.

You, my darling, are the real thing! You are a priceless work of art.

And don't ever let anyone tell you differently!

LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO WAIT!

Kathy, my friend of over 30 years, called me today to tell me her husband, Joe, had passed away. I'm so sad for her and their daughter.  My heart is just breaking.  They were married 38 years ago tomorrow.  He was only 61.

ONLY 61!  He was planning to retire this year so they could do all the things they hadn't done when they were working.

Please don't wait to do those things you are planning to do when you retire.  Start doing them now.  Travel.  Spend time with your friends and family.  Go to dinner with your kids.  Take that painting class you have talked about for years.  Learn to dance.  Go to the movies by yourself.  Walk in the park and pretend you are the four again.   Roll in the leaves.   Skip rocks across the water of a pond.  Be silly. Stop caring what people think of you.  Live like this might be your last day.

The hardest lesson I learned when Jim passed away last year is that i am going to die.  I have a finite amount of time left on this beautiful earth and I don't want to spend it working, being angry, unhappy or lonely.  I want every day to count.

Don't wait to start living until sometime in the future.  It might be too late.

Rest in peace, Joe Barrios.  You were a good man, husband and daddy.  Gone too soon but never forgotten. You will be sorely missed.

THE INVISIBLE PEOPLE

If you have never fed the homeless, you have missed out on a great experience.

It will make you grateful. It will make you sad. It will make you feel useful. It will give someone hope. It will make you see people the way God does. Just like you but less fortunate.

Homeless people are not taken care of by the government. They are invisible people. Hoping for shelter but usually lying on concrete or sitting in wheelchairs in the same place day after day. The food lines are never long enough for everyone to eat. They will tell you how long it has been since they have eaten. They never take more food unless it is for someone who can't walk to the line.

They aren't greedy. They aren't mean. They are just like us. Just down on their luck. Most have no families that can or will help them.

If you or your partner were injured or got sick and couldn't work, how long would you be able to live in your home or apartment before you became homeless?

For most it is less than a month. Just a month away from being like the people who live on the outskirts of one of the most beautiful and successful cities in the world. And we don't even see them. Except when we go to an Astros game and we just don't want these dirty homeless people near the parking or stadium. Then we see them.

They hurt. They cry. They are embarrassed. They are hungry. They are dirty. They have few clothes. Many have no shoes. All they have are a few belongings that if they walk away for a few minutes will probably be picked up by the city and thrown away.

We are the homeless. They were once us. No matter where you live, there are homeless people. None of us can feed them all. But we can feed 50 or 30 or 10 or even just one. Even one will make a difference. And a difference in your life.

Matthew 25:35-40 New International Version (NIV)

35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,
36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?

38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?

39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Brothers and sisters. That's what they are. Just like us but down on their luck.

MOTHER’S LOVE IS LIKE NOTHING ELSE!

MOTHER’S LOVE IS LIKE NOTHING ELSE!

If you have children you know there are times when you didn't like them much (and they probably liked you less).  When I became a mom, I promised myself that no matter what, I would never let the bond with my child be broken.

No matter how mad or disappointed I was with them, I would never ever close the door and walk away.  I can tell you there were times it was hard but I'm glad I've always kept that cord attached.  There should never ever be a time that a mother's bond to her child is severed.  We are their moms.  No matter what, the door should always be open to our children.

Now, I'm not saying I'm was always a great mom or even a good one.  There were times (ok, years) that I thought I was the worst mom.  I didn't know what I was doing and I'm sure I did more wrong than right.  But I always loved them and never gave up.  And just like someone reminded me often during the dark times, "you have good kids.  They will be ok.  They will turn out just fine.   It just won't be for a few years."  She was right.  About it all.

If you don't have a relationship with your child, please consider making an effort.  It just takes a card, a phone call.  Doesn't mean you have to try to be where you once were.  It just means you let them know you love them.  No matter what.

What if your child, the one you loved from the time they were born, died today?  Or you found out they had a very short time to live?  How would you feel?  Life is short and fleeting.  If you haven't told your child you loved them lately, do it today.  If you are close enough to hug them, do it.

You may think you have a lot of time left because they are so much younger than you.  You never know.  Don't let another day go by.

Parents shouldn't have to bury their children.  It sucks.  But it happens.  Tell your child or children today that you love them no matter what.  Forgive them for whatever you feel they need to be forgiven for.   Just remember, they are your child.

To my friend who is having to face the reality of her child leaving this world, thank you for reminding me how precious an honor it is to be a mom.  My heart breaks for you but I know your child knows through his whole being that he is loved unconditionally throughout eternity by his mom.

Call your child.  Send that card.  Just three words:  I love you.

THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT

THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT

I wanted to share something with ya'll. Today I was at the bank cashing a check. I watched an old man (he might have been younger than me but he looked tired and old). He was bent over and using a cane. He was clean and carrying a back pack. I don't know about where you live but if you see an adult carrying a backpack in Houston, they are usually homeless and carry everything they own in that backpack.

I watched him walk through that strip parking lot picking up trash and putting it in the garbage. When I finally got my cash, I decided to drive over and talk to him. I got out of the car and said hello. He said, "I don't mean to bother anyone, ma'am." I told him that he wasn't bothering me.

I said, "I noticed you were picking up garbage and putting it in the trash can." He said, "Well, you know people just throw trash everywhere these days." I said, "I really appreciate it and I want to give you this gift card to go across the street and get you something to eat and I want to give you this cash for Christmas."

He was sitting on the curb when he looked up at me, with tears in his eyes and said, "Thank you so much. I'm a veteran waiting on my disability."

I had actually cashed my weekly allowance for twice what I usually make it out for so I went back to the car and got more money to give to him. I told him, "I have had a very good year and I want to share it with you." He said, "How did you know?" "God told me."

This old, tired, veteran of our armed forces put his head in his hands and cried so hard his shoulders shook. I thanked him again and wished him a Merry Christmas. Several minutes later I was on the street at the traffic light and I glanced over and saw him where I left him. His head was still in his hands and his shoulders were still shaking.

So why am I sharing this? Because there are many people out there who just need a little help. We all hear about the spirit of Christmas but too often it seems to be centered around what we buy as gifts or what we get as gifts. These people are invisible to most of us all year long. Find someone who needs a little help this Christmas and just help them. It doesn't have to be a lot. It doesn't even have to be money. It could be a blanket, some gloves, a coat you don't wear. You will feel the love emanate from that person.

Make the Christmas Spirit come alive this year. It will make your Christmas so special.

WHEREVER YOU GO, THERE YOU WILL BE

WHEREVER YOU GO, THERE YOU WILL BE

How many times have your seen others, or even yourself, decide that if you can just change your scenery, or location, that your life will somehow magically become different?

I know most of us have experienced it a time or two.  For some of us, it is a way of life.  We may say, “I know that change comes from within” but we really believe that it is that new man/woman, that new house, that new city, that new job that is really going to affect the change.

It doesn’t.  No matter where you go, who you are with, or what you are doing, the one constant is YOU.  If you are always looking for love, you will be looking for it wherever you go.  If you are always lonely, you will still be lonely in a group of people.  If you are wishing for a change in your life, you will still be wishing whether you live in the States or in Russia.  If you don’t have friends, chances are that wherever you live, you won’t have friends.

Why?  Because it truly is about YOU.  You are the common denominator.  You are the same wherever you are, wherever you run, wherever you hide.  If you want to see changes in your life, then the change you have to make first is YOU.   You don’t have to do an extreme makeover.  Start small.

I see so many women who believe their worth is totally dependent on whether they have a man in their life.  The end result is that they are in a new relationship about every 4 months, cry and moan when it ends, and wonder why it never works out.  The person they really need to depend on for their worth is themselves.  No one can give you what it takes to feel worthy.  It comes from within and that is where the change has to happen.

If you are lonely and don’t have friends, pick one hobby and make an effort to attend a function once a week or every two weeks to be around others who enjoy the same hobby.  Smile.  Make the first move and introduce yourself.  With each step you take, your confidence will take root and bloom.

To manifest a true change in your life, you have to start with yourself.  Other people may encourage you in changing but only you have the power to initiate it and see it through.

With each tiny movement forward, you will see the change more clearly.  If you choose not to change, then you will be where you are.  No matter where you go.  It really is true:  Wherever you go, there you will be.  Decide what you that will be.

HEY FATSO!

HEY FATSO!

I bet just reading the title stung a few of you.  I know it did me!  The sting of that word stills rips my heart.

I was the fat kid in school.  Now I wouldn’t say I was grossly overweight.  I was under 180 until after I graduated from high school.  But I was bigger than the other girls.  I wasn’t tiny and cute.  And I wasn’t happy.

I was called fatso, fatty, tubby, pig, you name it; I was called it.  Those words just shred the confidence and self-esteem of a child.   They do the same to adults but children have these little hearts and minds that are still forming.  It’s difficult for them to process it as anything but hurt and hate.

My first diet was at 8.  I’m sure I was on at least one diet a year, and sometimes 2, for the next 10 years.  My mother kept a book in the top drawer of her chest of drawers.  When I got married at 24 she still had it.  What was in that book?  My weight and measurements she took on Saturday.  If the numbers went down, I was worthy.  If they stayed the same or, heaven forbid, they went up, well, there wasn’t much value in me.   It seemed to me that the only thing that mattered about me was my weight.  Things like sewing, crocheting, playing the flute, playing the piano, writing poetry, refurbishing furniture, and making gifts for others didn’t seem to bring any value to my life.  I was just a number on the scale.  A big fat number.  Oh, and I hated that book.

I can remember many times seeing myself as a big fat egg.  Always in my mind there was this thin person who wanted to break that shell and scream, “This is who I really am!”  But I couldn’t.  I was fat.  And all fat people know that if you get into an argument with someone, you will leave the confrontation.  Why?  Because when the other person says, “Oh yeah?  Well, you’re fat!”, the argument is over.  There is no come back to that.

I wish I could say that only mean boys at school called me names.  Oh they did, right through high school.  I acted like I didn’t care.  But girls called me names too.  And of course I got called names at home.  It was not a happy existent for the little girl I was in the picture above at 5.

Overweight children have a very sad, lonely, alone life.  Oh, they may present to others that it doesn’t matter and they are happy go lucky and funny.  But it does matter.  It is just a terrible way for a little kid to have to grow up.  I never believed anyone loved me and I never believed anyone would.  Even after I married, it was 10 years before I truly  believed my husband loved me and wouldn’t leave.

For an overweight child, words said, and even words unsaid can cut to the core.  If I heard my mother say it once, I heard her say it a hundred times, “You have such a pretty face but”, and then she would shake her head.  Oh, I knew what came after but, “BUT YOU’RE FAT!”  It was like fat was all there was to me.  I hated it and I hated myself.  And I hated the people who made me feel so worthless.

I wish I could say that when I became an adult it was different.  It wasn’t for many years.  I would have people come up to me in a store and say things like, “You don’t need to be eating that” or “We don’t have anything in our store to fit someone like you.”   I tried to remember when I stopped being verbally abused by strangers.  I think it was when I became a manager at my job.  I gained some confidence and since then I don’t think anyone has ever said anything to me like that again.  If they had, I would probably have fileted them like a fish and left them twitching on the ground.  Yes, they had taught me well; you can use words to hurt deeply.

I trudged through my adult life gaining and losing; gaining and losing.  That’s what I had done since I was 8.  I was allowed too few calories, losing weight quickly.  When I would go back to eating normally, I would gain the weight back and more.  I was losing muscle and gaining fat.  I became fatter and fatter with each successive diet.

Finally, I just gave up.  I knew I would die fat and didn’t really care when.  I remember in the spring of 2013 I declared to anyone who listened, “I’m never dieting again or even trying to lose weight.  I’m going to eat whatever I want, when I want and as much as I want.”  And I did.  By now, the only thing I saw in a mirror was my eyes.  I knew they were pretty and nothing could make them ugly.  Well, except the dead look that stared back at me.

But that all changed when I started using Skinny Fiber.  I took responsibility for what I put in my mouth.  I made my own choices and learned to live with them.    I started looking at my body in the mirror wearing nothing.  It was so hard.  Even now I have problems with two areas of my body.  However, I have learned to appreciate and love my body, even as fat as it was and is, for taking good care of me all these years.  Sometimes it was the only protection I had.  I began to try new things, some I had feared trying.  I started pushing energy outward instead of just inward.

I have always been a loving and caring person but over the last 20 years, it had waned.  I found that again inside me.  Giving is something that gives me such joy.  Even if it is just sending a card to someone in the mail, it makes my heart warm.  It made me feel whole.  I began to feel complete.  I began to be that loving and caring person again.  I was changing from the inside out and the outside in.

How I wish my little younger self had been able to find that.  Her world would have been a completely different place.  But I will tell you:  I live with no regrets.  I don’t think I would have become the person I am today if I had not gone through all the years between 8 and 61.  I was like the Israelites roaming the wilderness for 40 years.  The Promised Land was so close to them but they just couldn’t see it.  That was me.  I see it now.  I’m heading to my Promise Land and I’m going to try to take as many people who have struggled with their weight with me as I can.

And to my little 8 year old self, I say this:  “You were beautiful inside and out.  You were so talented and creative.  Even though you will endure much in your life, you will make it to that Promised Land.  And you will be in my arms when we get there.  Thank you for keeping me safe.”

IN HONOR OF MY DADDY

IN HONOR OF MY DADDY

Today, September 5th, marks the 43rd anniversary of my Daddy’s death.

He was a very slender man growing up.  When he married, it definitely agreed with him.  Up until he was about 35, he was fat.  I mean really fat!  He was only 5’8” and he must have weighed 250 or more.  He was a preacher and about 1960-61, we started building a new church building.  “We” being the men of the church.  They all put in time on that building that still stands and is used.

We only had one car which my mother took to work.  So Daddy walked to the new church building and back every day, which I’m guessing was about 5 miles each way.  He worked on the building all day long.  Ate breakfast and took a sack lunch.  There was no eating fast food back then.  Over about 4 months he dropped to about 165-170.  His weight never fluctuated after that.  When I think about him exercising it still makes me laugh.  He would do bend overs and twist from the waist.  I doubt either exercise did much for him.  lol  If you had ever seen him, you would know why.  But he did them.  Every day.  Morning and night.  He was consistent.

So in honor of him, his weight loss and the 10 years he kept it off, I am going to do this.  From now, Sept 5 until Sept 30, anyone who places an order for Skinny Fiber (even re-orders) will receive a snack pack from me.  These snack packs are healthy, organic, and perfectly portioned.   I will have them mailed directly to you.  It’s my way of saying thank you and congratulations on your decision to get healthy.

You can check them out here at Graze.com.  I have an order coming in soon for myself and I’m so excited!  I’ll let you know what I think.

I’m always so happy when a new person joins the Skinny Body family.  Since I have been losing weight, I just want everyone to join me and make this their last weight loss journey too.

Here’s to you, Daddy!  You set the example way back in 1961!  It took me awhile but I’m following in your footsteps!

Order your Skinny Fiber here:  www.caryncann.com and then send me your mailing address so I can get you a snack box mailed out!

THE LOVE OF MY LIFE

THE LOVE OF MY LIFE

This is one of my favorite pictures of Jim and our son, Cody, when Cody was 2.

August 16, 2014 the love of my life, Jim Cannatella, ended his struggle and went home to be with the Lord. The one thing I wanted more than anything when we were married was children. He made sure that dream came true for me when we adopted Ashlie and Cody. We are all sad at his passing but so grateful that his long suffering is over and that he is at peace.

Jim and I had a great marriage for over 20 years. It was when we both gave up that the marriage ended. I hope if you are married you will take the time to make your marriage work. I don't live with regrets but I know we could have made it work if we had tried harder.

I'm so glad Ashlie and Cody were with me after his passing. I am especially grateful that Daniel Calderon was there, not just for Ashlie but all of us. And the person Ashlie, Cody, and I are most grateful to is an angel named Janet Atkins. She was Jim's home care provider for the past two years. The last couple of months she hardly left his side even when she wasn't being paid for it. There are not many people like Janet Atkins around. We are forever indebted to her.

Jim is being cremated and his ashes will be spread at a place he shared with the kids growing up. He said he always wanted them to be able to go there and know that he was all around.

I know you are always with me and the kids, Jim. We had a good run and you will always and forever be the love of my life. Spread your wings and fly, baby. You are completely free now. Love, Caryn

THE SADDEST DAY OF MY LIFE

THE SADDEST DAY OF MY LIFE

I was sitting here thinking about how blessed I am.   I see and talk to so many people who have such great sadness in their lives.  It made me think about being sad.    The saddest day of my life was the day I had my hysterectomy.  I was 32.

All I ever wanted to be was a mommy.  Well, that and Room Mother in elementary school.   I must have cried a million tears.  I had reached the end of my journey of having a baby.  There would be no more fertility treatments.  No more taking my temperature to see when I was ovulating.  My body had completely turned against me and could not do the one thing I so desperately wanted it to do.  I felt like my life had ended.

And to make it even worse, my surgeon decided (for his convenience) to put me on the new born floor.  I literally thought I would have a breakdown.   It was one of the few times I ever saw my ex get aggressive with anyone.  The only thing worse than that was when a well intentioned person said, “well, at least you won’t have a period any more. Lol”  I reminded them that I would also never be able to carry a baby.

It was a sad dark period of my life.  The only painting I have ever done was right before my surgery.  It was cold, barren, icy and nothing alive.  I still have that painting in my house to remind me just how sad and unhappy I was during that period.  Oh, I tried to comfort myself by having my nails done and my hair done every month.  But you know what?  Nothing, and I mean nothing fills that void of wanting so desperately to have a baby.  And then knowing for sure that it won’t happen.

My niece was born the day of my surgery.  She was conceived the same month as my last pregnancy which ended in a miscarriage.   She was bright spot in my world but still a reminder that my baby would have been the same age.

But then that day came, almost 7 years later, when my ex called and said, “Carolena wants to know if we want to adopt her baby?”  I couldn’t believe it!  I was so afraid of jinxing it before we even picked her up that we told no one.   When she placed Ashlie in my arms, my world became right.  That void in my heart was filled.  I was a mommy.

Even out of this sad time came a blessing so huge that at the time I could not see it through my grief.  Even when we can’t see it, God is working behind the scenes.  Sometimes it seems to me that it’s like pieces of a puzzle.  You might not see the entire picture but when it’s completed you realize how the pieces were being laid down in exactly the right places.

Out of sadness and grief came the most wonderful gift I could ever imagine.  My daughter, Ashlie.

BEING POSITIVE

BEING POSITIVE

Maybe it does for some, but for most of us, we have to choose and make a concerted effort to be positive! But we can do it! You just get up in the morning and said aloud, "Today I will be positive".
Now I'll tell you, it doesnt' change instantly. Like all good things, it takes time. I know! It doesn't seem right that negative things that root immediately and positive things that time. But that is the way it works. Once you start doing this everyday, you will find that the positive days far outnumber the negative days.
Try it. What do you have to lose other than bad days.

ARE YOU A HUGGER?

ARE YOU A HUGGER?

I admit it.  I’m a hugger.

I didn’t grow up in a warm fuzzy family.  My parents didn’t hug us.  After Ashlie and Cody arrived I became more of a hugger but mainly with them and their dad.  When you haven’t been hugged as a child I think it is out of your comfort zone to hug.

I guess about a decade ago I decided to start hugging.  I’ll admit in the beginning it was difficult.  Way out of my comfort zone.  Think about it…you are putting your arms around another person (maybe someone you don’t even know) and pulling them into your own body.  It was scary.  I started with just my friends.  Over the years I have learned to hug anywhere and any time.

I hug my kids, my friends, my customers, anyone who comes to my house gets a hug.  I have hugged people in the waiting room at the dr.’s office.  I have hugged office personnel.  I have hugged my pharmacist and pharmacists assistant.  What I have found is that by hugging I am allowing myself to give unconditional love and receive unconditional love.

Sometimes the person you give a hug to really needs that hug.  Once when Marisela and I weren’t as close as we are now, her hug brought me through a very dark time.  I was sitting in Walgreens waiting to see the nurse.  I was so sick.  I was sitting there with tears streaming down my face as I thought, “I am so alone.  I’m just all by myself.”  And then Marisela appeared.  She knew something was wrong and she hugged me.  She told me later that she rarely went to Walgreens.  Coincidence?  I don’t believe in them.  That hug really cemented our friendship and it got me through that dark time.

If you aren’t a hugger, try it.  I know it might feel awkward and uncomfortable in the beginning.  But the more you give love, the more you get love.  And if you are a hugger, well, you know all this already.

Brighten your day and someone else’s.  Hug someone today.  You will feel the love.

I LOVE MY KIDS

I LOVE MY KIDS

My kids are spoiled.  Yep, I admit it.  I don't really care what anyone thinks about it.  They are my kids.  I'm fortunate that I make a good living.  That does make it easier when money can take care of something.

My kids both work.  Ashlie is totally self-sufficient but there are times that she does need help.  My philosophy is:  if you are doing what you are supposed to be doing, then I will help you.  Now sometimes, I just can't but for the most part I think I'm there.  She has definitely found her path and is marching through.

Cody works too and he is on the path to self-sufficiency.  He lives with me but he has to pay rent.  Why?  Because in the real world everyone has to pay rent.   He is also required (since he had to move back in with me) to give me all of his paycheck and then I give him money for food, bus, etc.  Before he moves out, he will have two month’s rent, deposit, transportation and money in savings.  The last few months he will have to show me that he can take care of his finances.

I wish I had been taught some of these lessons when I was in my 20's.  It would have made my life so much easier.  I want them to be spared from the mistakes of being young if I can.  I tell them often, I'm not smarter than you; I have just lived longer.

I make them Easter baskets and Christmas stockings. I buy them souvenirs everywhere I go.  If they are in a bind, I'm going to be there.  If they need my help, they know they can call me.  If I can help, I will.  If they need to talk, I'll listen and try my best not to give unsolicited advice.

No matter how angry we get with each other (flashback teenage years), or how much we dislike each other at the moment, I want them to know this one thing to the core of their being:

I am their mother.  Even if I don't particularly like them at a particular time, I will always love them forever and a day.  I want them to always, always know that no matter what, I'm just a phone call away.  And if you have or had that with your mom, you are blessed.
