OH, HAPPY DAY

One of my favorite gospel songs by Andre Crouch!   It makes me want to jump up, raise my arms and dance a little bit!   It just fills me with such joy!

Joy - that elusive feeling so many of us long for and search for.   Sometimes we stand waiting for it to cover us like sprinkles of rain from a downpour.

It's really much easier than that and you don't even have to wait for it.

Like happiness, joy is a choice.   You can choose every day, every moment to have joy.  Maybe you get joy from music.  TURN IT ON!  Maybe dancing makes you feel joyful!   Get up and move!   I dance around my office all the time.  Sometimes there isn't even any music on.

Spending time with my best friend, Marisela, and laughing always lifts my spirits and fills me with joy.   If we go several days without getting together, when we see each other we are like 4 year olds!   Jumping up and down, hugging each other and laughing like it’s been years!

You will notice that the more joy you have, the more joy thieves will start lurking around to steal it.   That is the time to allow and embrace more joy.  And remind yourself how much joy you will have when they leave.

There is that tiny seed of joy planted deep within your heart.   Feed it a little today.  Water it.   Love it.  Care for it.   Then watch it bloom and change your life!

CONFESSIONS OF A STRUGGLING FATTY

CONFESSIONS OF A STRUGGLING FATTY

I’m struggling on my last weight loss journey.  Yes, I’ve been stuck on a plateau for the last 6 months.  I still haven’t gotten back to jogging regularly since my car accident.  But those aren't really the problem.  Those are just temporary setbacks.

The loss of weight has not and still is not apparent in all of my body.  Because of the over 50 years of gaining and losing over and over my skin has no elasticity.  My lower abdomen is just a huge flap of mainly skin.  The last time I weighed it, it was 25 pounds.  If I lived on 1000 calories a day the rest of my life, it would still be there.   It feels like a parasite feeding off of my body.   Underneath this appendage, my stomach is flat.  I have looked in the mirror so many times in the past few months with my stomach lifted so I don’t see it.    I look small and normal.

The other part of my body that is so out of proportion is my upper arms.  They are just humongous and have decreased very little with all the weight I have lost.  When I look at my arms, I see my normal size fore arm attached to an upper arm that is the size of a thigh.  It’s bizarre looking to say the least.  And it’s frustrating.

It’s very difficult to buy clothes to fit me.  My pants have to fit over this huge stomach.  That means they will be baggy in the legs and waist.   Last week for the first time, I actually noticed that the seams on the sides of my pants end up being about 3 inches on the front on both sides of my hips.     My waist is about the size of a 14.  But my stomach requires an 18 most of the time.  The same with tops.  My torso is a large or x-large.  My upper arms are a 3x.   I had someone tell me not too long ago (in a very loving way), “Girl you need to get a shirt that fits you!  That one is about to fall off!”  It was.  Off my body.  It fit my upper arms.

The only way I see to have a body that is really my body is to have cosmetic surgery.  It’s expensive.  Very expensive.  Especially since I only want to have it done in a hospital and not a surgical center. Every day since January 1st, I have put it out there to the universe, “I am going to have my surgery by January 2016.”   I tell you.  I have no idea how that will happen.  I just know in my heart it will.

Until then, I am going to keep working my program and get back to my jogging.  I want to lose 60 more pounds by the end of the year.   I know that after my surgery I am going to feel like a prisoner who has been released from their prison.   My body will at last be the body it should have always been.   And that person who has been kept hidden inside for over 50 years will be freed!

Yep, I’m struggling but not giving in or giving up.   I’m back on track and I see the finish line.  I’m the only one who can get me there.  And I’m going to make it if I have to crawl across that line with bloody knees that no longer have any cushion in them!  I have come too far to ever give up!
My plea to you is this.   If you are overweight please don’t wait until you are 60 to decide you deserve to lose weight and get healthy!  Don’t use your weight as an excuse to put off living.  I’m telling you the years go by faster and faster.

Tell yourself daily:  I am worthy!  I deserve to be healthy and lose weight.   Decide that you are going to make those changes to complete your last weight loss journey.   Find a meal plan that you can live with, find an exercise you enjoy, and try Skinny Fiber.   It isn’t a magic pill but it will help make your journey much easier.

WHEN PEOPLE LEAVE YOUR LIFE

WHEN PEOPLE LEAVE YOUR LIFE

Today on my way in to work I started thinking about some people who chose to leave my life and the lives of my children.  The first couple of years after this happened, I admit it bothered me.  It made me sad.  I finally decided that all I could do was accept and respect their choice and move on.

While I was roaming around those memories, the song "He lifts me up" came on the radio.  I started thinking about how I have been lifted up during this past 15 years without them in my life.  I have been blessed with friends coming into my life who are like family.  Men and women.  Older and younger.  When I need them, they are always there for me.  I have a beautiful woman who is only 5 years older than me who calls me her daughter.  It makes my heart so full.  My children have always been the center of my life and they are even more so now as they grow into adults.

I thought, it's true that I have lost those 3 people from my life.  But look what I have in return.  Brothers and sisters, a mother, friends who know the true meaning of friendship.  And I have a rock solid relationship with my kids.

Sometimes we look at what we have lost rather than what we have gained.  My life is overflowing with blessings and love.  Don't waste a day thinking or mourning for something that was.  Spend your time thinking about what is.  Open your heart and life up to the possibilities of the blessings that can come to you when you stop trying to relive the past.  Move into the now and see what has come into your life that maybe, just maybe, you would have missed out on if others hadn't left your life.

And then take a big ole' breath and exhale while you say, "I am truly blessed".  Because you are.

DEPRESSION

DEPRESSION

Have you ever experienced depression?  I don't mean feeling a little down.  I mean deep depression where a flat tire or a nuclear war have the same effect on you and your brain.  I lived with that kind of depression for over 2 decades.

I found things that helped ME and in the last 3 years I have not had one episode of depression.  First, and I'm only talking about me, not you or anyone else.  Medication never worked for me.  It took the edge off a little but I never felt normal or not depressed.

The first thing I discovered was that when I went outside in the sun, my depression lifted.  It didn't go away but it lifted.  However, it was so tough just getting dressed and going outside.  I would have to make myself even though I knew it would make me feel better. When you are depressed you just prefer a dark room all by yourself.

The second thing I discovered was that exercise really made a difference.  Any kind of exercise.  Again, when you are in a depressed state, going out and exercising is difficult.  But when you do it, the endorphins release in your brain and it does lift the depression.  When I first started an exercise routine back in 2000, I was amazed how my depression lifted.  I had never had the success with medication that I got during that year of exercise.

And the last thing I discovered was about 3 years ago.  I had long periods of depression and then times when it was there but not so bad.  I could feel myself start spiraling into that black abyss.  It was just so easy to slide down into the darkness.  I made a conscious decision that I was going to fight the spiraling.  When I would start spiraling I would isolate myself.  Stop communicating with my friends.  Stay inside unless I had to go out, like work.  And then to get out of the bottom of that pit, I'd have to fight and claw my way back out.  It's a vicious cycle.

When I would feel a spiral coming on, I made myself contact my friends.  I made myself go outside.  I would tell myself, "You can spiral for only 24 hours and then you have to start interacting again."  Was it easy?  NO.  Did it always end after 24 hours?  Not in the beginning.

But I started doing it.  Each time a spiraling event happened, it got easier and lasted less time.  One day I realized that I had not had a spiraling incident in over a year.  Now it has been over 2 years.  I truly believe I retrained my brain.

Now, that I am jogging, I find that being out and exercising has helped me even more.  When I'm hurt or mad, I think about going out and jogging.  Even when my ex-husband, Jim, passed away, it was different.  Yes, I'm still grieving and I'm very sad.  But I'm NOT depressed.

I'm not saying people shouldn't take anti-depressants.  You should do what works for you.  But while you take medication, try going outside.  Try exercising.  I prefer holistic approaches to chemical ones.  That is just me.  But even when I take medication, I try holistic approaches too.

I can tell you that these 3 things have made such a positive difference in my life.  Maybe they will help you too.
